Curitiba is a Brazilian city, capital of Paraná State, located 945 meters above sea level in the first plateau of Paraná, about 110 km from the Atlantic Ocean. In 2007, according to U.S. magazine Reader’s Digest, was the city with better quality of life in Brazil. It is the eighth most populous city in Brazil and the largest south of the country with a population of 1,746,896 inhabitants. It is the principal city of Curitiba Metropolitan Region, comprising 26 municipalities and has 3,172,357 inhabitants on an area of ​​15,447 km², making it the eighth most populous metropolitan area in Brazil.

Curitiba also has high levels of education. Has the lowest illiteracy rate and best quality in basic education between the capitals. The MasterCard Index of Emerging Markets in 2008, created with the intent to evaluate and compare the performance of cities in different functions that connect markets and commerce around the world, said Curitiba in 49th place among the cities with greater global influence. Curitiba was also cited in a recent survey published by Forbes magazine as the 3rd largest city “smart” world, which considers the smart city that cares, jointly, to be ecologically sustainable, quality of life, good infrastructure and economic dynamism.
